How to Play Daily 5

Daily 5 is a game that might look difficult to play, but really its extremely easy. You can take part at any Michigan Lottery retailer and gives you more options on how you play (and win!) compared to a traditional lottery like Fantasy 5. We have split out all the important steps for you below, so just follow each one and by the end you’ll be all set!

Choose your numbers

First up, choose which five numbers you want to enter. You can choose the same number more than once if you wish, or you can have an Easy Pick choose them at random for you. This step is important, as the numbers you choose affect your entry type and odds of winning.

Select your draws

Choose whether you want to play the Midday draw, Evening draw, or both. By default you will be entered into the next upcoming draw. You can also choose an advance play and enter up to 60 draws in a row.

Decide on your wager type

Pick your bet type – Straight, Box, Wheel, 2-Way or 1-Off. If you chose some digits more than once in Step 1 then this will affect your odds in the Box, Wheel and 2-Way entry types. More on that can be found below.

Buy your tickets

Each entry is $1. So if you entered both the daily draws then it will cost you $2, and will multiply for every consecutive draw you entered. Now you’re set, and ready for the draw!

Ticket sales close at 12:49 PM ET for the Midday draw, and 7:08 PM ET for the Evening draw. They reopen a couple of minutes later ahead of the next draw. The draw times are 12:59 PM ET and 7:29 PM ET.

Bet Types

Bet types are as important as the numbers you choose when it comes down to finding out if you have won, and what the odds of winning are. Below we have described each play type and what the different combinations are.

  • Straight - Match all the numbers drawn to those on your ticket in the exact same order
  • Box - Match all five numbers that were drawn, but in any order
  • Wheel - All the different combinations of your selected five numbers are entered as different Straight entries. So you just want to match the five numbers drawn to those that you also selected.
  • 2-Way - Your entry fee is split so half is a straight entry of your numbers, and half is a box entry of your numbers. You can win both wagers if you match the Straight option, or just the box if you match in any order.
  • 1-Off - You win if you match all the numbers selected in order, or if one of your five digits is one away from the one that was selected.

Number Combinations

Box, Wheel and 2-Way bets will change depending on if you choose a digit more than once, e.g. 11345, 11145 or 11115 and so on. It changes the number of combinations you can make of your selected number, making it easier or harder to match those selected.

  • 5-Way – Four digits are the same and one is different – 11112
  • 10-Way – Three digits are the same, and the other two are the same – 11122
  • 20-Way – Three digits are the same, and then two different digits – 11123
  • 30-Way – Two different duplicates and one digit on its own – 11223
  • 60-Way – Two digits the same, then three different digits – 11234
  • 120-Way – All five digits are different - 12345

When the red ball is drawn, a second draw happens right then to give you another shot at winning. The next day, all the balls go back in the drum. The process repeats itself until the promotion is over.
